Day 97 – A Picture Tells a Thousand Words

When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would know who is touching him and what kind of woman she is – that she is a sinner.” Jesus answered him, “Simon, I have something to tell you.” “Tell me, teacher,” he said. “Two people owed money to a certain moneylender. One owed him five hundred

denarii, and the other fifty. Neither of them had the money to pay him back, so he forgave the debts of both. Now which of them will love him more?” Simon replied, “I suppose the one who had the bigger debt forgiven.” ” Jesus said. Luke 7: 39-43

Jesus has such a gentle way of revealing truth. But is it effective! Here, He picks up the Pharisee’s unspoken thoughts and then challenges their inadequacy through a parable. Simon cannot help but give the right answer, which immediately reveals the error in the mental calculations he had just been making. It is genius. Like a safety razor that can do its job without harm if used properly. Beware wielding an unprotected razor – it is likely to do more harm than good.

“A picture tells a thousand words.”

I would be so bold as to suggest that you cannot share the good news of Jesus by speaking of fire and brimstone! Try amazing grace instead.

which of them will love him more? …the one who had the bigger debt forgiven… you have judged correctly…

Father God, please show me how I can challenge thoughts and behaviour that run counter to Your Kingdom values in a way that is gentle but decisive. Amen.
