Day 95 – Dance or Dirge?

Jesus went on to say, “To what, then, can I compare the people of this generation? What are they like? They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling out to each other: “ ‘We played the pipe for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not cry.’ For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon.’ The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’ But wisdom is proved right by all her children.” Luke 7:31-35

Carrot; stick. Laugh; cry. Dance; dirge. Jesus must have been shaking his head at the intransigence of the people before him. Whoever God sent to try and draw them to Himself, they had a problem. It’s easy to look at others and see their inconsistencies and pride. Not so easy to see it in myself. A little pearl of wisdom I once heard is that we tend to be irritated by behaviour in others that reflects what we are like. There’s one to ponder. Meantime, will I allow the Holy Spirit to shine a light into the darker places of my attitudes and behaviour?

HolySpirit, shine a light into the darker places of my attitudes and behaviour

Father God, grant me the humility and determination to change, that I might become ever more like my Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen.
