Day 93 – Trusted Guide

After John’s messengers left, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swayed by the wind? If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear expensive clothes and indulge in luxury are in palaces. But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. This is the one about whom it is written: “ ‘I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.’ Luke 7:24-27

Jesus uses a three times repeated phrase concerning John: “What did you go out to see?” Let us ask a similar question, but turn the focus on Jesus: “What does this man mean to me?” Is He a cosy tutor, from whose teachings I pick and choose as suits? (a reed swayed by the wind?) Is He a King (in a palace) to be obeyed at a distance? Or is He God made Man, somehow both Friend and Lord, the trusted Guide for my daily journey?

my messenger will prepare your way before you

Lord Jesus, forgive me when I hold You at a distance or don’t take You seriously. Help me to entrust myself to You unreservedly. Amen.
