Day 89 – The Heart of Jesus

Soon afterward, Jesus went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd went along with him. As he approached the town gate, a dead person was being carried out – the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the town was with her. When the Lord saw her, his heart went out to her and he said, “Don’t cry.” [Luke 7:11-13]

In our previous incident, healing flowed following the pro-active intervention of a friend of the sick person. Here Jesus observes a funeral and intervenes. Why? We are told that His heart went out to a mother who had lost her son, having already lost her husband. Is this not a beautiful snapshot of the gospel? Paul, once again captures it beautifully: “But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions – it is by grace you have been saved.” Ephesians 2:4-5

“Don’t cry”, Jesus said to the mother. Let us, in similar vein, rejoice in our improbably good fortune that God’s heart is so inclined towards us that He reaches out to us in our helplessness to transform our lives.

It is by grace you have been saved

Father God, it’s so easy to bogged down by problems, mine and others’. Lift my head to see the wonderful things you have done in my life and are doing in others’, that I might rejoice – big time! – and praise You for your goodness. Amen.
