Day 84 – Firm Foundations

“Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say? As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice, I will show you what they are like. They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.” [Luke 6:46-49]

If we call Jesus, Lord, we need to listen to his voice and do what He says. Simple as that.

Learning to listen carefully and discern accurately how His words apply to our own situation may take a lifetime. But to take the fundamental decision to seek His instruction and obey it is a pre-requisite to discipleship. A building will only stand if it is on firm foundations. Otherwise, it will collapse. It’s the same with our lives. Jesus guarantees that, if we put into practice His words, we will have a firm foundation.

If not, we won’t. Over to us.

… everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice

Father God, please show me just what it means to build my life on the foundation of your words. Amen.
