Day 83 – The Heart of the Matter

“No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. Each tree is recognised by its own fruit. People do not pick figs from thorn bushes, or grapes from briers. A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.” [Luke 6:43-45]

In the world of fashion I inhabit day by day, I see a lot of people dressing to create a certain image. In the business world, you learn to discern real smiles and false grins. Some of the illusions created will be essentially harmless. Others can be highly damaging – to the person masquerading and to those on the receiving end.

We can try and pretend we’re this sort of person or that sort. But at the end of the day, it is what is in our heart, our true motives and aims, that will reveal who we are. We would do well to ensure we don’t allow ourselves to get drawn into a syncretistic contemporary view that we can mix and match to create any persona we fancy.

Instead, may we pray with King David:

Teach me your way, Lord, that I may rely on your faithfulness; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name. [Psalm 86:11]

God has created us and given us certain characteristics. Let’s discover them and stay true to the person he has made us.

The mouth speaks what the heart is full of
