Day 82 – Finger Pointing

He also told them this parable: “Can the blind lead the blind? Will they not both fall into a pit? The student is not above the teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like their teacher. “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when you yourself fail to see the plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye. [Luke 6:39-42]

Jesus is always urging us to have us look at things from the other way round. Rather than just love our friends, we should love our enemies. Rather than demand back anything lent, give them more.

Here, Jesus reverses things again: rather than observing everyone else’s faults, we  should look first in the mirror and take stock of our own. Ouch!

There’s a clever little bit of street wisdom saying that we shouldn’t point a finger at others as there will be three fingers pointing back at ourselves! (Try it out, in case you’re not familiar with the idea!)

First take the plank out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye

Father God, please set me free from insisting that I am at the centre of my worldview. Instead, show me how to put You in Your rightful place. That way I will be set free from the tyranny of self and love my neighbour better. Amen
