Day 74 – Kingdom Manifesto

He went down with them and stood on a level place. A large crowd of his disciples was there and a great number of people from all over Judea, from Jerusalem, and from the  coastal region around Tyre and Sidon, who had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. Those troubled by impure spirits were cured, and the people all tried to touch him, because power was coming from him and healing them all. [Luke 6:17-19]

Luke arranges the events in his gospel to highlight that the first thing Jesus did after appointing his core team – the 12 apostles – was to publicly set out His manifesto for the Kingdom He was ushering in. We are about to engage with Luke’s version of Matthew’s “Sermon on the Mount”; the New Testament update of the 10 Commandments. We will do well to gird our loins, for what follows is not just a beautiful, poetic ideal, but a code of conduct for those who would call Jesus “Lord”. It is accompanied, not by a harp, but by a show of power that flowed from Jesus to transform the lives of all He touched.

Power was coming from Him and healing them all

Lord Jesus, show Your power today, in me. Amen.
