Day 58 – Determined Calm

At sunset, the people brought to Jesus all who had various kinds of sickness, and laying his hands on each one, he healed them. Moreover, demons came out of many people, shouting, “You are the Son of God!” But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew he was the Messiah. [Luke 4:40-41]

There seems to be an air of calm to Jesus’ ministry. “At sunset” suggests that the heat and activity of the day had subsided. Dealing individually with the people that were brought to Him, demonstrates an absence of rush, enabling each to have His full attention. And the demons trying to stir things up were quickly hushed so as not to interfere. How it was that everyone on this occasion was healed, whereas elsewhere they were not, is something to be considered on another day. Similarly, the insight demons had into who Jesus was.

Let us restrict our focus today on Jesus’ carefulness to create and maintain a calm environment for His daily work. Rush leads to being unsettled, which in turn leads to stress, ineffectiveness and eventually to illness. Hardly a desirable sequence, but one that can be all too familiar in driven 21st Century lives.

Jesus set a template for effectiveness long before management manuals were being written. He set Himself up for success by dealing with challenges one by one, and ruthlessly eliminating distractions. He created a determined calm.

Laying His hands on each one, He healed them

Father God, grant me discipline to create an environment of space and calm where You can most effectively work through me. Amen.
