Day 51 – Fulfilled

“Jesus went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. He stood up to read, and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written: ‘The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.’ Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him. He began by saying to them, ‘Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.'” [Luke 4:16-21]

Oh what joy that I find myself arriving at this wonderful passage on Easter Day. For all Jesus’ claims about who He was, would have been proved phoney if He had remained dead after His crucifixion. Just another pretender. But the tomb was empty; the dead man had been raised back to life and was walking amongst His friends again. Hallelujah!

Just as Jesus claimed Isaiah’s prophesy was being fulfilled in Himself that Sabbath Day, so His Father was confirming, on the first Easter Day, that His Messiah had fulfilled His work. The early believers were so convinced of the reality of this, that they changed the Sabbath (the day of fulfilment and rest) from Saturday to Sunday to mark the Resurrection.

This Risen Saviour passed on to His Spirit-filled followers His own anointing: to proclaim good news to the poor, freedom to the prisoners, sight to the blind, release to the oppressed, the arrival of the Lord’s favour. We have been given the keys. “I have given you the keys of the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 16:19)

Will you and I pick up the keys of Isaiah’s ancient prophecy, as Jesus did, and use them to set people free in our day?

I am the living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades [Rev 1:18]

Father God, I praise You, that You freed Jesus from death. Will You use me in these days to set free those you send me to from the things that bind and oppress them? Please do so, in the power of the glorious name of Jesus. Amen.
