Day 49 – Fight Smart

“The devil led Jesus to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. ‘If you are the Son of God,’ he said, ‘throw yourself down from here.  For it is written: “He will command his angels concerning you to guard you carefully; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.”’ Jesus answered, ‘It is said: “Do not put the Lord your God to the test.”‘ When the devil had finished all this tempting, he left him until an opportune time.” [Luke 4:9-13]

Do not put the Lord your God to the test

The word “If” returns. The devil always tries to undermine those who would stand against him; questioning identity, undervaluing worth, distorting truth, creating uncertainty, triggering dissatisfaction. Jesus has none of it. He totally ignores the personal attack. Instead He corrects the devil’s continual misuse of Scripture. It is almost as if He chooses to be completely oblivious to the one who is challenging Him and uses the attacks as an opportunity to remind Himself of His Father’s words for His own encouragement.

No wonder the devil sloped off. He could see that he was making no progress. In fact, quite the reverse; Jesus used the testing to strengthen His trust in His Father. He was standing on the shoulders of the devil’s lies and ended up in a more commanding position.

We can emulate Jesus. The challenge is not to brace up and face our trials with all the resilience we can muster – we’ll be easily defeated. Rather, we need to be soaked in scripture and filled with the Holy Spirit, as Jesus was. That will be our springboard to victory; Fight smart, not hard.

Prayer:

Remind me, Father God, that the devil has been defeated at the cross and has no hold over me if I come to You. I ask You not to protect me from times of testing but to prepare me for them, that I might emerge victorious, as Jesus did. Amen.
