Day 46 – Tough Times

“Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry.” [Luke 4:1-2]

Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness

The opening scene of Jesus’ ministry finds Him full of the Holy Spirit. It’s as if He has a journey to travel and has been to the Service Station to fill up with fuel. But this fuel doesn’t just power the engine, it takes hold of the steering wheel as well. And it is immediately clear that being directed by the Spirit is dangerous. Jesus finds Himself spending six weeks in the wilderness, tempted by the devil, and starving. Tough times.

If we are to walk in the footsteps of this man, the going will not be easy. Luke flags that up from the very beginning. It will take a conscious decision to stick with Him through these tough times. But we will have  the full resources of Heaven at our disposal.

Reminds me of Psalm 23: “Even  though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me.”

Prayer:

Father God, you led Jesus through times of tough testing. I accept that this is the path of true faith and, if I am to be His disciple, I too will be tested. Strengthen me as You strengthened Him. Amen.
