Day 43 – Loved By The Father

“When all the people were being baptised, Jesus was baptised too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: ‘You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.'” [Luke 3:21-22]

There is a string of alignments and symmetry here that excite me. We are all born as a baby; so was Jesus. As all the people were being baptised; so was Jesus. The Holy Spirit descended on Jesus at His baptism; so it did at Pentecost, and since, on those who believe in Him. God loved Jesus; so He does us.

If we are born and born again (symbolised by baptism) we receive the Holy Spirit and are loved by One who is well pleased with us. Have I got that right? Do I believe this? That I am part of God’s family, loved and pleasing to Him? It’s more important than anything else on Earth.

If you own this as reality, as I do – rejoice and thank God. If you’re not sure, ask Him to reveal His love to your heart. If you can’t accept that the God of Creation loves you, my prayer is that He might open your heart, mind and eyes to see His love. The evidence for this love? He sent His Son to Earth to die for us that we might be restored to Him. “God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” [Romans 5:8]

A voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased”

Prayer:

Father God, that You want to know us when we put ourselves rather than You on the throne of our lives is amazing. That You love us so much that You sacrificed Your own Son that we might be restored to You is extraordinary. Thank you and help me to grasp the enormity of its significance. Amen.
