Jesus said to them, “How foolish you are, and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?” And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself. Luke 24:25-27
It’s a big ask, a very big ask, to expect a 21st Century man or woman to align their life’s energy and goals on the basis of three days of events that took place two millennia ago. Particularly when it means swimming against the tide of contemporary culture and opening oneself to spiritual, and in some places, physical attack.
We are not, however, asked to commit intellectual suicide. Jesus sets a template for giving a carefully considered foundation on which to decide whether He Himself is the real deal; one who can be trusted, for whom it is worth laying down all else to follow where He leads.
Is this so bizarre? Consider the law of the land. The law is not just a bunch of annoying rules drawn up as suits, to catch us out. It is based on hundreds of years of experience and carefully considered principles. And case law gives examples of how the principles should be applied in daily life. As a result we accept and follow the law – on the whole. (Even a hardened criminal will drive on the same side of the road as everyone else!)
Father God, thank you that You respect the minds you have given us, by providing good reason to know, love and serve You. Amen
