As the soldiers led him away, they seized Simon from Cyrene, who was on his way in from the country, and put the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus. Luke 23:26
This is the reality behind the picture Jesus had painted a while earlier: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. Luke 9:23
Simon from Cyrene was given no choice. You and I are not forced to take up our cross; we are invited to, if would identify ourselves with Jesus. Look back to Day 125 for my thoughts on Jesus’s imagery of carrying our cross.
Today, though, it is time to quietly ponder the hot and dusty road to Calvary that Jesus and his unwitting helper walked. Thank Him for His obedience. These words may help.
And being found in appearance as a man, Jesus humbled himself by becoming obedient to death – even death on a cross! Therefore, God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow. Philippians 2:8-10
There was a considerable cost to Jesus’s obedience, but an even greater reward. It will be the same for us: I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us. Romans 8:18
Lord Jesus, thank you for Your sacrifice. May my daily walk reflect your obedience, as I take up my cross to follow You. Amen
