Then came the day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover.” Luke 22:7-8
These must have been exciting but agonising days for Jesus. Exciting, in that He knew He was approaching the focus and fulfilment of His life’s purpose. Agonising, as He knew what would happen to Him – and it was going to be ghastly.
The disciples thought they were going to be celebrating the historic remembrance of the
Exodus from Egypt, when the Angel of Death passed over the Israelites, who had daubed the blood of a sacrificial lamb on their doorpost.
Jesus knew that He Himself was going to be the sacrificial lamb, ushering in a new covenant that would include not just the Israelites of old, but all people for all time. It was a massive deal.
It’s often best to allow scripture to speak for itself. Here are six quotes tracking, in chronological order, the unfolding of God’s plan to redeem mankind through His Own Son:
Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, “Father … the fire and wood are here … but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?” Abraham answered, “God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” Genesis 22:7-8
Then they are to take some of the blood and put it on the sides and tops of the door frames of the houses where they eat the lambs … The blood will be a sign for you on the houses where you are, and when I see the blood, I will pass over you. No destructive plague will touch you when I strike Egypt. Exodus 12:7,13
He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter. Isaiah 53:7 John (the Baptist) saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! John 1:29
In a loud voice they were saying: “Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honour and glory and praise!” Revelation 5:12
The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp. Revelation 21:23
Father God, it’s hard to comprehend how it can be right for You to have allowed Your own Son to be killed for sinful mankind. But You did and, as a result, I am set free to live in the light and warmth of Your glory for eternity. Amazing grace. Thank you.
