Day 264 – Test of Eternity
Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness and the anxieties of life, and that day will close on you suddenly like a trap. For it will come on all those who live on the face of the whole earth. Be always on the watch, and pray that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen, and that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man. Luke 21:34-36
All this talk of disaster, terror, heaven and earth passing away … and now I’m not even allowed a drink to unwind! What sort of freedom is this?!
Jesus didn’t buy us freedom to do as we please. He bought us freedom from the things that ensnare us – self, Satan, stress. He invites us to embrace an entirely different world view, with eternity as our measuring stick, where our first priority is to love God and the second is to love our neighbour as ourself. Our energy to pursue this very different lifestyle comes from being filled with the Holy Spirit – not spirit of the alcoholic variety with its associated hedonistic pleasures.
Is this a dull, fun-less existence? If making a name for yourself and having a laugh is your aim in life, clearly so. If we take a longer term view that eternity starts today, our outlook on life, it’s purpose and aims, will be transformed, and the shallowness of worldly pleasures will be laid bare in all their futility.
There’s a lot at stake here; worth considerable thought. Will my life, and all it represents, stand the test of eternity?
