Day 258 – In Between Times

“Teacher,” they asked, “when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are about to take place?” He replied: “Watch out that you are not deceived. For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am he,’ and, ‘The time is near.’ Do not follow them. When you hear of wars and uprisings, do not be frightened. These things must happen first, but the end will not come right away.” Luke 21:7-9

Jesus can seem a bit of a tease sometimes. One minute warning of impending doom, the next adding, “but not yet”.

It is a similar story today: the Kingdom of God has been ushered in by Jesus, but it’s presence, as history rumbles on, is only partial. Satan was defeated at the cross, mbut evil has not yet been banished from mthe Earth. A perfect future beckons, but we don’t know when it will arrive.

We are in between times.

This is a tension we must live with.

Accepting Jesus’ offer of eternal life does not lift us clear of the frustrations of the everyday. Our chains of slavery to self may have been broken, but we still have to grapple with how to play our part in a fallen world.

We live in a spiritual war zone, and anyone claiming to know anything different, or indeed, when the cavalry will arrive, is not telling it straight.

Prayer:

Father God, grant me patience to live a fruitful life in an “in-between” world. Amen
