Day 254 – Dress to Impress

While all the people were listening, Jesus said to his disciples, “Beware of the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and have the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of honour at banquets. They devour widows’ houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. These men will be punished most severely.” Luke 20:45-47

Whilst it is tempting to identify the first part of Jesus’s description here with what many church leaders in the 21st Century look like as they set about their work, I don’t think that’s the point Jesus would make if He were writing this.

Rather, following on from yesterday’s observations, I think He would want you and me to resist being cowed by today’s movers and shakers: those with the status, the power and all the trimmings that go with them, expensive clothing or otherwise. For these are often the same people who would brush aside the Kingdom of God as irrelevant in the modern world.

No, no. We need to put on our own clothing: an all purpose combination of armour, able to repel the fiercest attacks of the evil one; complemented by a winning outfit that will melt the most critical eye.

Prayer:

Fight the good fight with all thy might; Christ is thy Strength, and Christ thy Right; Lay hold on life, and it shall be Thy joy and crown eternally (Words: John S B Monsell).
