Day 244 – Who is this Man?

They discussed it among themselves and said, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will ask, ‘Why didn’t you believe him?’ But if we say, ‘Of human origin,’ all the people will stone us, because they are persuaded that John was a prophet.” So they answered, “We don’t know where it was from.” Jesus said, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.” Luke 20:5-8

This is a perfectly ridiculous conversation. Responsible, educated leaders, whispering to each other, trying to justify themselves and protect their reputation. … all this, with none other than the Son of God looking on. A bit like teenagers, caught having a fag behind the school cycle sheds, not facing up to the fact that the person to whom they are sheepishly denying their actions is the headmaster.

I am writing this just before Christmas time, recalling having read on the back of someone’s newspaper the view that “Christmas is for family not Jesus.” (Hardly Christ-mas then, but, hey-ho!) A not dissimilar lack of recognition of just Who we talking about here: the One whom the Old Testament prophet Isaiah, hundreds of years previously, had foretold thus: For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. Isaiah 9:6-7

Each of us needs to take stock: Who is this man that stands before us? … and decide whether we will let Him into our life.

Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me. Revelation 3:20

As Jesus approaches the time of His death and resurrection, Who He is, what He offers us, and the response He demands, come increasingly into focus. I must get this quite clear in my own mind and in my own life before I can share the eternity transforming potential of Jesus with others.

I give You all the honour and praise that’s due Your name. For You are the King of glory, the Creator of all things. I worship You; I give my life to You; I fall down on my knees (words: Carl Tuttle).
