A certain ruler asked him, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” “Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good – except God alone. You know the commandments: ‘You shall not commit adultery, you shall not murder, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, honour your father and mother.’ ” “All these I have kept since I was a boy,” he said. When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” Luke 18:18-22
There’s a logic chain here. Jesus says “No one is good – except God alone. But Jesus was God, so He was good. The “certain ruler” clearly thought he was good. But, equally clearly, he was not God – so, by Jesus’s dictum, he was not good.
Jesus, though, was not playing word games with this man. Nor was He trying to be clever and catch him out. Jesus was exercising God-given discernment that enabled Him to see below the surface of this man’s life. What lies behind the facade of our lives is often not what we think. We discover our full humanity only when our deeper motivations are laid bare and we allow Jesus to get to work transforming them, restoring the image of God that He has placed in us.
This discovery will not take place simply by an intellectual assessment, looking into a mental mirror at how we’re getting on in life. That was where the “certain ruler” fell short. Rather we need to listen to Jesus, speaking through the Spirit as we submerge ourselves in God’s Word. What we discover, that which is revealed to us is most likely to be uncomfortable, quite possibly painful. But we need to undergo this examination if we are find who we really are made to be.
Lord Jesus, please reveal whatever there is in me that prevents my being fully human, the person I was made to be. Amen.
