People were also bringing babies to Jesus for him to place his hands on them. When the disciples saw this, they rebuked them. But Jesus called the children to him and said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” Luke 18:15-17

Doesn’t this land one on the nose of our pride?! The grown ups rebuke Jesus, presumably for wasting his time with little people who can’t even reply, let alone engage with Him.

Yet, Jesus rebukes them by calling the children to Him. Worse still, He says that the grown ups need to receive the Kingdom like these very same children, or they will not be able to enter it.

Loving the idea or not, like children we must be, if we are to engage with Jesus and carry out His work on Earth today.

How, then, do we embrace those characteristics of the little children that Jesus is thinking of? Presumably not by throwing tantrums and demanding our own way all the time! It must be to do with their unquestioning trust, their lack of status and therefore pride, and their total dependance.

The older we get and the more experience we have; the higher we rise in the world’s  structures; the greater our ability to cope with whatever life throws at us: the more challenging it is to hold on to, or regain the characteristics of little children that will qualify us for receive the Kingdom, and be its hands, feet and voice.

First step? Down onto those knees to seek the face of Jesus and hear His voice.

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, I come to you. Show me how to trust You more and rely less on my own abilities and understanding. Amen
