“But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’ “I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” Luke 18:13-14

Such beauty flows through this passage. Such a heartbeat of hope. Such glorious grace.

A tax collector – sinner – with bowed head; emotions running high; an outpouring of despair, desperate for a response of undeserved mercy and forgiveness.

You can almost feel a tear in Jesus’ eye as he tells this part of His story. For this is what He came to Earth for. This is why He submitted Himself to the injustice of  evil men. This is why He surrendered to the agony of the cross.

To bring forgiveness to sinners. To replace their pride and arrogance with humilty and love. To restore relationship between Creator and created.

This made it all worth it.

As I write, I find myself thinking of the words of that most wonderful of songs “The first time ever I saw your face.”

I have amended the words slightly, so I may comfortably sing them as a love song to my Lord and Saviour.

The first time ever I saw Your face. I thought the sun rose in Your eyes. And the moon and the stars. Were the gifts you gave. To the dark and the endless sky. And the first time ever I kissed your feet. I felt the earth move through my hands. Like the trembling heart of a captive bird. I was there at Your command. And the first time ever I walked with you. I felt your heart so close to mine. And I knew Your joy would fill my heart. And last till the end of time

Lord Jesus, as I look at Your face, I fall on my knees in love and worship. Fill my heart with joy as I drink in Your glorious grace Amen.
