Day 217 – Focus on Today

Then he said to his disciples, “The time is coming when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man, but you will not see it. People will tell you, ‘There he is!’ or ‘Here he is!’ Do not go running off after them. For the Son of Man in his day will be like the lightning, which flashes and lights up the sky from one end to the other. Luke 17:22-24

There have been more predictions of Jesus’s return than I have had hot dinners. They have all come to nothing. Makes you wonder why people still do it!

Jesus stated quite clearly that even He did not know the day when He would return to Earth a second time: “But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Matthew 24:36

But return He will (eg. John 21:22), and it will not be concealed, as was His first coming in Bethlehem, but as clear as lightning flashing across the sky. We certainly won’t miss it!

Meantime, Jesus said that we should not go running this way and that, trying to predict His return. Rather, just as He was focussing on the huge trial that stood before Him, we should concentrate on our daily walk as, if we take up our cross as He did, we will have more than enough to contend with: Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own” Matthew 6:34

We cannot be salt and light in a needy world if we spend our lives wondering about the future.

Same principle applies more generally. It’s easy to worry about uncertainties ahead and neglect today’s challenges.

We can only deal effectively with what and who stands before us.

Lord Jesus, please help me keep my focus on living one day at a time; that I might meet the needs before me rather than worry about things I can do nothing about. Amen
