Day 214 – Activation Code

Now on his way to Jerusalem, Jesus travelled along the border between Samaria and Galilee. As he was going into a village, ten men who had leprosy met him. They stood at a distance and called out in a loud voice, “Jesus, Master, have pity on us!”  When he saw them, he said, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went, they were cleansed. Luke 17:11-14

Today, we see the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ at work, putting into action the love of God. We don’t know whether the ten lepers were poor unfortunates finding themselves in unjustified hardship, or unpleasant characters, bitter at their exclusion from everyday life. The absence of gratitude we shall see tomorrow suggests more of the latter than the former.

Regardless, without so much as an interview, Jesus’ compassion leads Him to heal the men and set them up for a return to their homes and families. He didn’t take their worthiness into consideration. The basis for their healing was His unwarranted grace.

All the men had to do, having presented themselves before Jesus, was to obey His instructions. His compassion was activated by their obedience. Their healing followed.

I sometimes set up new online payments through my bank. I log on and present my request (who and how much I want to pay). Before the transfer can take place, an activation code appears on my screen and, on receipt of a phone call, I tap in my code number to release the payment.

Can you see the connection? Jesus doesn’t administer magic. He engages with us and we have to take action for His power to be released in us. His grace; our response.

Father God, I choose your gracious offer of life. Please release me from the grip of voices inside that struggle to achieve Your acceptance by my own efforts, and forgive me for the pride that wants to be self-sufficient. Amen.
