After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in that whole country, and he began to be in need. So he went and hired himself out to a citizen of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed pigs. He longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything. “When he came to his senses, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have food to spare, and here I am starving to death! I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired servants.’ Luke 15:14-19
“When he came to his senses.” The son had to sink low (penniless) and then lower still (hungry) until the hold his “wild living” had on him was revealed and it’s power broken. He had to be desperate to hear the wake up call that his circumstances had set off.
Seems to me that anyone who has heard of Jesus, realised what He has done for them, and yet hasn’t turned to Him, has yet to come to their senses. And need to hear alarm bells from Heaven.
In the eternal economy, all of us are penniless. In spiritual terms we are, all of us, starving. Yet, we restrict our vision to the world’s horizons and fill ourselves with food that does not satisfy our deepest needs. And we pretend that all is well.
Oh dear. What is the way out of this dire state? Paul’s knew that there is only One who can achieve this transformation in us: Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord! Romans 7:25
Father God, I come to You, empty. Fill me with all that I need to know and to love and to serve You. May You set off alarm bells in those known to me who have heard, but not responded to Your overtures of love. Amen.
