Large crowds were travelling with Jesus, and turning to them he said: “If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters – yes, even their own life – such a person cannot be my disciple. And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple. Luke 14:25-27
Clearly Jesus is not suggesting here that we turn nasty with those closest to us. Honour your father and mother is commandment no 5 of the 10. Nor, indeed, should we be despising ourselves, for we are instructed to love our neighbouras ourselves. Luke 10:27
Jesus must therefore be exaggerating for effect. The love I have for those around me is based on imperfect relationships, unreliable people, within the limitations of the time and place in which I find myself. This falls so far short of the perfect, consistent, eternal love that Jesus has for me, this it is almost hatred by comparison. If we don’t get this, we will always fall back to our faulty human relationships and pattern of life, rather than pressing forward as Jesus calls and leads us.
Does this mean that I love those around me less? Quite the opposite. As I get to understand and trust in the Father’s love for me, I learn how better to love my family, friends and colleagues. Even when it can sometimes seem as painful as carrying a cross, with all the self sacrifice that entails.
Lord Jesus, please reveal in me something of the love you demonstrated when you carried that cross to set me free. That I might be Your true and faithful disciple. Amen
