At that time some Pharisees came to Jesus and said to him, “Leave this place and go somewhere else. Herod wants to kill you.” He replied, “Go tell that fox, ‘I will keep on driving out demons and healing people today and tomorrow, and on the third day I will reach my goal.’ In any case, I must press on today and tomorrow and the next day – for surely no prophet can die outside Jerusalem! “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing. Look, your house is left to you desolate. I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’ ” Luke 13:31-35
It’s always tempting to try and unravel a passage like this to better understand the chronology. I’m not sure it will bring great benefit though. What will be of benefit is to allow ourselves to catch something of Jesus’s clear sighted vision of His mission, His determination to see it though regardless of the clear danger, and the love for His people that drove Him forward.
From this we can learn much and apply it to our own calling today. Am I clear what my unique mission is? What are the obstacles to achieving it? Do I have a compassion for the people I am serving amongst, that I long for them to have the incomparable privilege and joy of knowing Jesus as their daily companion through life? Its time to press on.
Lord Jesus, grant me clear-sightedness, determination and compassion to carryout my mission. Just as You carried out Yours. Regardless of the cost. Amen.
