Now there were some present at that time who told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices. Jesus answered, “Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans because they suffered this way? I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish. Or those eighteen who died when the tower in Siloam fell on them – do you think they were more guilty than all the others living in Jerusalem? I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish.” Luke 13:1-5
There are those who reckoned that the planes crashing into the twin towers of the World Trade Centre in 2001 was God’s judgment against a corrupt West and, in particular, it’s unjust financial systems. We can’t prove that one way or the other, but try telling that to the widow of a modestly paid firefighter who gave his life trying to save others that tragic day. And what if one of those heroes, in a theoretical consideration, had actually been a gambler and a drunk who cheated on his wife and abused his children? Would he have “deserved” his fate anymore than a caring family man?
Jesus tells us that sin is sin. Regardless of whether I gossip behind someone’s back or hit them over the head with a spade, I have sinned against them – whether they “deserve” it or not. And we all do it. Actually, it goes deeper than just what we do. It is who we are that we need to reconsider. Any Sunday School teacher worth their salt will explain that I is at the centre of sin. Tricksy, maybe, but it is a truism that our main problem in life is that it is me who is on the throne of my life rather than God. And that is where things have gone wrong. And that is what we need to repent of and seek to put right. All of us.
A trio of quotes from the apostle Paul (where would we be without him!) may help to reflect on this before God.
All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. Romans 3:23-24
What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death? Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord! Romans 7:24-25
If you think you are standing firm be careful that you don’t fall! 1 Corinthians 10:12
Father God, thank you for saving me from myself. Help me, each day, to take my hands off the steering wheel of my life and allow Yours to guide me in that I do. Amen.
