Day 177 – All For Jesus

Through Luke 12, Jesus seems to carrying out a dual dialogue, speaking alternately to the disciples, and then to a crowd of many thousands who were “trampling on one another.”

To the disciples, He focussed on hypocrisy, priorities, readiness. To the crowds, He spoke of priorities, readiness and … err … hypocrisy!

So, the same message? Yes, and no. We are told elsewhere that Jesus shared His teaching with those who came to hear Him: When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Matthew 9:36

With the disciples, though, He was going a lot further; unpacking that teaching in order that they not just understood what he was saying, but were equipped to put it into practice. Then, when He was shortly to leave them to rejoin His Father in heaven, they could carry on where He left off: Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. John 14:12

“Whoever believes in me”, says Jesus. This is not just intellectual assent. This is belief that  consumes us and will be the rudder for our whole life, leading us to be rich towards God, letting go of worry, being ready at all times, not being diverted by opposition, steadfastly holding onto the fact that our faith is the most real thing in our life. In short, disciples are called to go all out for Jesus.

Jesus, all for Jesus

All I am and have and ever hope to be

Jesus, all for Jesus

All I am and have and ever hope to be

All of my ambitions, hopes and plans

I surrender these into Your hands

All of my ambitions, hopes and plans

I surrender these into Your hands

For it’s only in Your will that I am free

For it’s only in Your will that I am free

Jesus, all for Jesus

All I am and have and ever hope to be

Lyrics: Robin Mark

Whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing and they will do even greater things than these
