Day 170 – People First

“Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom. Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will never fail, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Luke 12:32-34

So … today I have a number of work issues to resolve. Several of them sprung up in quick succession yesterday, and left me feeling anxious. As I went to bed, I was reciting to myself: “Seek first the Kingdom of God … Trust in The Lord … and lean not on your own understanding …” My hope was that, by laying down the problems at the foot of the cross, I would be released from anxiety as the Holy Spirit worked in me to bring together His inspiration and my experience.

As I did so, the thought occurred to me that, although the apparent nature of the challenges were team structure, operational effectiveness and finance, actually the key to the solution lay in the people involved. If I focussed on them, the Spirit whispered, the solutions would flow. Rather than grappling with the issues and trying to prise them out of the “difficulty” box and into the one marked “opportunity”, I should step aside and come from a different angle, seeking first to build up people, rather than solve problems.

And this brought a different perspective on today’s verses. Is my treasure located in successfully resolving everyday matters, or in developing the people around me? Each day will bring its own troubles, and if all my energies are spent tackling them, it will be a relentless grind. If I invest in people, seeking to understand better their hopes and fears, the relationships built will be a blessing that will last, a treasure that will never fail.

… seeking first to build up people, rather than solve problems

Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also

Prayer:

Father God, please give me insight into the hearts and minds of the people I am meeting with today. Give me courage to prioritise them and trust that solutions to the challenges I face will fall into place as You work behind the scenes. And, as a result, may Your Kingdom come. Amen
