Day 163 – Transparent Living

Meanwhile, when a crowd of many thousands had gathered, so that they were trampling on one another, Jesus began to speak first to his disciples, saying: “Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known. What you have said in the dark will be heard in the daylight, and what you have whispered in the ear in the inner rooms will be proclaimed from the roofs. Luke 12:1-3

One of my day to day maxims in the workplace is not to do or say anything that I would regret seeing reported on the front page of a national newspaper. I reckon I don’t do too badly on that front. Much scarier would be the idea that my thought life was recorded on video footage for the world to watch on YouTube.

There have been many examples of just these things in recent times where the misdeeds of seemingly a whole generation of TV presenters have been exposed decades later. And then we have celebrities bleating about compromising videos of themselves being revealed to the world at large after they have broken up with former partners. Easy to say, “Well they shouldn’t have shot them in the first place”, but are you and I so free from anything we’re not proud of?

Jesus was pretty clear, in the Sermon on the Mount, about the inner and outer life. Here’s one example: “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. Matthew 5:27-28

God’s people are called to lives of integrity and purity. Transparent living, pouring out of clean hearts, where we are not ashamed of anything we have done and, where we do mess up, we keep short accounts with God by bringing any misdeeds to a forgiving Heavenly Father: If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9

Create in me a pure heart, O God and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Psalm 51:10

Prayer:

Father God, create in me a pure heart, that I might live a life worthy of your grace. Amen
