Day 161 – Signpost

“Woe to you experts in the law, because you have taken away the key to knowledge. You yourselves have not entered, and you have hindered those who were entering.” When Jesus went outside, the Pharisees and the teachers of the law began to oppose him fiercely and to besiege him with questions, waiting to catch him in something he might say. Luke 11:52-54

Exactly what Jesus was talking about yesterday is now enacted by the religious leaders before Him. And it is so ugly. Those with the authority and responsibility (and privilege) to point people towards a loving and gracious God, are not just ineffective, they are an obstacle. When this is pointed out to them, rather than repenting (as the people of Nineveh did – Day 155), they turn on Jesus, as their ancestors had with the prophets of previous generations.

Begs a few questions: Am I an effective signpost to Jesus? Or an obstacle? Do I respond positively to correction? Or am I hardened in my ways? Am I bringing to life the Kingdom of God where I am and who I’m with? Or do I make no difference?

Prayer:

Father God, forgive me, please, for the times I am an obstacle to the spread of Your Kingdom. Set me free to run for You. Amen.
