“Mary stayed with Elizabeth for about three months and then returned home. When it was time for Elizabeth to have her baby, she gave birth to a son. Her neighbours and relatives heard that the Lord had shown her great mercy, and they shared her joy.” [Luke 1:56-58]
“She gave birth to a son”. An everyday occurrence. In context, though, not so everyday. Elizabeth had not been able to have children and was in old age by the time she was told she would have a baby. And the baby himself would be a prophetic voice, preparing the way for the Saviour of the World. A little bit special then. The picture shows the front cover of Private Eye marking the birth of Prince George, heir to the British throne. Such a fuss surrounded his birth that Private Eye, in its usual style, decided to strip it down to its basics! It was amusing, but we weren’t deceived. We knew it spoke of the birth of a king to be. My line of thought here? Normal events can have anything but normal significance – if we can but see it. It’s very unlikely that Elizabeth’s neighbours and relatives would have realised the train of events that were set in motion by the baby’s birth that day. Elizabeth herself knew that it was a miraculous pregnancy but, with Zechariah’s mute state, she may well not have grasped the magnitude of her son’s arrival.
The fact that she had celebrated her pregnancy as God taking away her disgrace (see Day 8) maybe confirms this limited understanding. Dad Zechariah was probably the only one who knew just what was going on. And this was because it had been revealed to him by God Himself through the angel Gabriel. I’m not sure I could cope with seeing the full implication of everything that happens around me. But, as a Spirit filled member of the Kingdom of God, I would most certainly live far more to my full potential, if I tuned into what God would show me if I spent more time with Him.
Father God, if I am to make a significant impact on the world around me, I need Your revelation and not just my own thinking. Show me something of the way You see things and the purpose behind them, so that I might speak and act prophetically into situations I find myself in day by day. Amen.
