Day 156 – In Step With Jesus

“No one lights a lamp and puts it in a place where it will be hidden, or under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, so that those who come in may see the light. Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eyes are healthy, your whole body also is full of light. But when they are unhealthy, your body also is full of darkness. See to it, then, that the light within you is not darkness. Therefore, if your whole body is full of light, and no part of it dark, it will be just as full of light as when a lamp shines its light on you.” Luke 11:33-36

There’s a lot of light in these verses; rather less clarity! Firstly, the suggestion seems to be that we should share the good news of Jesus Christ – for He is the Light of the World that people need to see and hear about. That’s what we give out. But the focus then seems to shift to  what we take in. The amount of light we allow into our soul. This is governed by what we choose to look at, how we see it, whether our eyes are rested and working well.

Maybe Jesus is illustrating and applying the previous verses? Like Jonah, we should be boldly obedient in sharing truth revealed through us – so we are in step with Jesus.

At the same time, like the Ninevites, we need to be prepared to change our own course – so we are in step with Jesus. Let us place our feet in the footsteps of the King.

See to it, then, that the light within you is not darkness

Father God, help me to understand that I am on a journey and that I can instruct as well as learn from my fellow travellers. Amen
