Day 153 – Lasting Satisfaction

“When an impure spirit comes out of a person, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’ When it arrives, it finds the house swept clean and put in order. Then it goes and takes seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that person is worse than the first.” Luke 11:24-26

Why does the dieting industry flourish? Because enforced diets rarely work. As soon as the regime is complete, the hunger pangs return, on goes even more weight and it’s back to the diet! Ditto any craving or ingrained habit.

Changing our lifestyle and behaviour will only meet with lasting success if we replace one behaviour with another. There are many products to help smokers quit by replacing cigarettes with a substitute. Similarly for drug users.

The person sitting beside me on the train this morning is reading a large book about Psychic Powers (I wonder if he’s developed sufficiently to realise I am writing about him!) The banner above the newspaper headline opposite reads “My wake-up call for mid-life drinkers”.

Don’t think I need to spell it out. Jesus is speaking here about the risk that, after a person is freed from demonic powers, they will return with their nastier mates, unless the space vacated is filled with something.

The only “something” that will last, surely, is that which has its origins in Eternity. To throw light on this, let us refer to Jesus’s discussion about drinking water with the Woman at the Well: Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” John 4:13-14

If we hanker and settle for worldly satisfaction of our appetites, we will remain forever frustrated. If we dare to cast these aside and invite the Holy Spirit to fill us with the things of eternity, we will discover the “something” that will satisfy us forever.

The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever. 1 John 2:17

Father God, dare I forsake the multitude of protective measures the world looks to, and place my security in Your hands? Help me to trust You and believe that the armour You provide is not just adequate, but will give me the only true and lasting safety. Amen
