Day 151 – Divided We Fall

Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them: “Any kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and a house divided against itself will fall. If Satan is divided against himself, how can his kingdom stand? I say this because you claim that I drive out demons by Beelzebul. Now if I drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your followers drive them out? So then, they will be your judges. But if I drive out demons by the finger of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you. Luke 11:17-20

In the entertaining film version of Robin Hood with Russell Crowe, the king of France, in alliance with disaffected English nobility, is weighing up when to invade England. He is advised by the villain (played by Mark Strong) that England is divided against itself, northern barons against the king, so the time to invade is now, which he does. But not before England, temporarily, has patched up its differences, and the French are repelled by a united English force on the beaches of Dungeness.

Jesus had clearly watched Robin Hood! He knew that a divided nation would not stand. His comments reveal a second incompatibility: light and dark – the Kingdom of God and the Kingdom of Satan – cannot co-exist.

Conclusion? A compromised and divided church will fall into the abyss of darkness. A pure and united church will prevail and bring light to the world.

Which will we be?

Any kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and a house divided against itself will fall

Father God, may we learn from Jesus, from history, from films if we must, that , if we are to be Your people in this day, we must reflect your purity and the unity of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen
