Day 142 – Life in a Nutshell

On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?” “What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you read it?” He answered, “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’ ; and, ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’ ” “You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.” Luke 10:25-28

These few verses pretty much sum it all up – life in a nutshell. What is life; how do we live it; is it significant? Shakespeare’s Macbeth’s gives us the darkest take:

“Life’s but a walking shadow, a poor player that struts and frets his hour upon the stage and then is heard no more. It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury signifying nothing.”

The religious academic who asked the question, as we shall read tomorrow, was trying to be clever. Jesus turned his self-important theorising into a magnificent review of life and it’s purpose:

1. Look to the Bible, it is God’s manual for life.

2. Take note of what it says, for the purpose of life as intended by its Creator is revealed.

3. Do it!

The interesting thing is that the questioner knew the right “answer” but the knowledge had stayed in his head and (see yesterday) had puffed him up rather than moving down to his heart, where it could change his attitudes and thence his actions.

If we love God for real, as our first priority, it will inevitably flow into love for our fellow players on life’s stage. And this is no strutting and fretting for a season, it is the commencement of a life, signifying all it was meant to, that will run for eternity.

Do this and you will live

Father God, may the words of this hymn be my prayer: Take my life, and let it be consecrated, Lord, to thee. Take my moments and my days. Let them flow in ceaseless praise. Amen
