Day 140 – All in a Name

The seventy-two returned with joy and said, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name.” Jesus replied, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.” Luke 10:17-20

It was a heady time, as the seventy-two returned in triumph from their first mission trip. Things had gone well. Actually better than expected: “… even the demons submit to us …”. Remember the fiasco at the foot of the transfiguration mountain? (Day 128) Lessons had been learned. And you can just see Jesus beaming with happiness and pride as He saw these successes mirrored in the heavenly realms, with Satan taking a serious stumble. Happy days!

Two key things to spot in the text: both concerning a name. Firstly, the successful expulsion of the demons was carried out in the power of Jesus’ name. May we never think that we can conjure up the power ourselves. My namesake, Simon the Sorcerer in Acts 8:9, is a warning.

Secondly, all the miracles in the world are but signposts towards the key thing: in Jesus’ name we are saved and our names – yours and mine – are written on the membership list of Heaven if we accept His undeserved offer of eternal life.

I, for one, want to keep Jesus’ name and my name close together.

Prayer:

Father God, Please keep my eyes fixed on You and not forever wanting to see new and wonderful examples of Your power at work. Amen
