Day 135 – Overflowing With Love

Luke 9 sees us moving beyond Jesus’ day to day ministry of miracles and healings to sending the disciples out for the first time by themselves. Jesus’s true identity is fully revealed with the first overt references to the death He would die as the fulfilment of His life, and a glimpse into another world.

We start to get a feel for the fact that Jesus’ life wasn’t a show for us to marvel at and applaud, but a model for us to follow. We are shown that there is a choice to be made and a price to pay if we are to follow in the footsteps of this King.

We have considered a number of ways that these choices are manifested. We must:

  • Exercise the authority and power we have been given.

  • Grapple with the fact that, in the Kingdom, least is greatest.

  • Understand that our feet have a path on Earth to walk, but our eyes can already see something of eternity.

  • Learn what it means to love, not judge those around us.

  • Expect following Jesus to take us our of our comfort zone.

  • Decide whether we take the High Road of Kingdom living or the Low Road of compromise with the World’s ways.

Reversing the first letters of the bullets above spells the word DELUGE. We can either be overwhelmed by the scale and challenge of the Christian walk; or we can ask for such an outpouring of the Holy Spirit that God’s love overflows into the lives of those around us.

Whoever wants to save their life will lose it but whoever loses their life for me will save it

Father God, fill me afresh with the Holy Spirit that I might overflow with the love of Jesus. Amen
