Day 133 – The High Road

As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem. And he sent messengers on ahead, who went into a Samaritan village to get things ready for him; but the people there did not welcome him, because he was heading for Jerusalem. When the disciples James and John saw this, they asked, “Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them ?” But Jesus turned and rebuked them. Then he and his disciples went to another village. [Luke 9:51-56]

“You take the high road and I’ll take the low road, and I’ll be in Scotland afore ye” go the words of the old song.

Jesus, throughout his three years of active ministry, had a very clear view of his mission and was focussed on it. Here, we read that He set out resolutely for Jerusalem, and with it arrest, false trial, beating and crucifixion. He was very much focussed on the High Road.

The disciples, by contrast, were wanting to slug it out with those who seemed to be getting in the way. They were focussed on the Low Road.

Jesus saw through this and steered them away from conflict so they could focus on the right priority. High Road or Low Road?  Which to take?

Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem

Prayer:

Father God, open my eyes that I might understand the High Road in my life and grant me focus to prioritise and stay on that path. Amen
