Day 13 – Catching The Spirit

“At that time, Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea, where she entered Zechariah’s home and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.” [Luke 1:39-41]

Our two leading ladies come together for the first time since both found themselves caught up in God’s eternal plans. It’s hardly surprising that the spiritual atmosphere around them is so charged that an unborn baby senses what’s going on and leaps in the womb. And it seems that Elizabeth “catches” the Holy Spirit from Mary … and the baby inside her likewise. The Spirit moves as He pleases (see John 3:8); there is no formula to “invoke” Him. (Quite the opposite, as Simon the Sorcerer found out in Acts 8.) But if we are obedient to God’s call and hang out with those who are working out God’s plan for their lives, surely we are more likely to get caught up in the Spirit’s activity and experience His guiding and empowering presence for ourselves. Is that a bit wishy-washy for you? Maybe, but it is my experience.

I am confident that I have the Spirit’s presence in my life and I regularly ask to be filled afresh. But I don’t feel or sense that presence very often. However, when I am around those in whom He is self evidently at work, it overflows to me and I am encouraged. I hope that, although I may not be particularly aware of it that often, others will be encouraged by me when I’m in the Kingdom groove. Hope so. What a joy to be a blessing to others.

Holy Spirit, fill me afresh this day, that Your presence and power might overflow into the lives of those around me. Amen.
