Day 124 – Alarm Bells

Jesus strictly warned them not to tell this to anyone. And he said, “The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.” [Luke 9:21-22]

Jesus’ words here would clearly have sounded alarm bells with the disciples. Following Jesus, thus far, had been an extraordinary adventure, with numerous healings, demons driven out, the dead raised, storms calmed, miracle picnics. OK, there had been some opposition, but that was to be expected where people’s status and livelihood had been challenged.

Now, though, there was news of John the Baptist being hideously executed and Jesus was talking about the Son of Man experiencing a similar fate. Was this a metaphor of some sort, an indication of the challenges anyone who upset the status quo would face? Or was there something altogether bigger going on here? The disciples only partially understood and were left trying work it out. We know the answer. Jesus went the whole way and turned history in its head.

What about me today? Is all my “faith stuff” only scratching the surface? Am I living as if I only partially understand what I am called to? Or am I taking Jesus’ words at face value – with all the life changing implications that has? The lid on that one will be lifted tomorrow.

Prayer:

Father God, there is more than enough evidence in the Bible of how You want me to live my life. Open my eyes, not just to what it actually says, but to my own prevarication, that I might step out boldly as Your soldier and servant in a broken and needy world. Amen
