Day 121 – Master of the Calendar

When the apostles returned, they reported to Jesus what they had done. Then he took them with him and they withdrew by themselves
to a town called Bethsaida, but the crowds learned about it and followed him. He welcomed them and spoke to them about the kingdom
of God, and healed those who needed healing. [Luke 9:10-11]

I am sitting between two of the most inspiring women in London. It is the end of July and holidays beckon. Both these brilliant people are exhausted, one postponing the start of her vacation due to work pressures. “Do brilliance and exhaustion inevitably go together?” I boldly ask them. I guess the answer to this question depends on what you see as success.

Looking at Jesus, He seems to have achieved complete success in what He was called to do by balancing hard work and extended periods of intense activity with withdrawal and rest. It’s so easy to get the balance wrong, in either direction. Jesus was a master at getting it right. We would do well not to assume we can get it right by ourselves, but ask Him to reveal to us His perspective on work, rest and play so we become effective and not just busy. We may be surprised at how different His planning is to ours.

Master of the Calendar, please show me how to manage my diary. Amen.
