Day 113 – Time of Completion

As Jesus was on his way, the crowds almost crushed him. And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years, but no one could heal her. She came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak, and immediately her bleeding stopped. Luke 8:42b-44

Another person in crisis. This time, a woman who has been suffering for 12 years. Hum: 12 seems to keep cropping up:  the woman’s suffering ended at 12 years; the girl’s life crisis was at 12 (my friends’ daughter died at 12); there were 12 tribes of Israel, 12 apostles, 12 months in the year.

Maybe a little tenuous, but it seems that 12 points signifies completeness or fulfilment. It may not, therefore, be unreasonable to wonder if the extent of the woman’s suffering had reached its completion – it was time for her to be set free, and it was never going to happen any earlier or later?

Let’s not get hung up on the significance of particular numbers, but our lives, however tangled they may seem, might just be safer from fear if we learn to trust that God is working His purposes out and we can either rail against them, or humbly accept and embrace them? Even though we might not see light at the end of the tunnel yet, God is no-one’s debtor – quite the opposite. His plans are for our good. He knows what He’s up to.

Should we, then, take a fatalistic view of life? What will be, will be! No point in praying as God is going to do what He’s going to do! Actually, no. For prayer is as much about finding out what’s on God’s heart, as it is sharing what’s on ours. If we don’t ask we won’t find out.

for I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. [Jeremiah 29:11]

God is working His purposes out as year succeeds to year. God is working His purposes out and the time is drawing near. [Hymn by Arthur Ainger]

Father God, accepting Your will can be difficult when times are hard and Your ways are not easy to understand. Please grant me a steady belief that Your purposes will work out in my life if I trust in You. Amen
