Day 106 – A New Priority

Now Jesus’ mother and brothers came to see him, but they were not able to get near him because of the crowd. Someone told him, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to see you.” He replied, “My mother and brothers are those who hear God’s word and put it into practice.” Luke 8:19-21

Is this a snub for Jesus’ family? So taken up with His new found fame, they couldn’t even get near Him. Jesus had moved on; they were old news! Whilst Jesus’ turn of phrase seems a little odd, such a scenario is inconceivable. But it does flag up that priorities change when I become part of this new Kingdom and those from my “previous” life may not understand my new motivation. Here’s the parallel passage in Mark’s gospel: “When his family heard about this, they went to take charge of him, for they said, “He is out of his mind.” Mark 3:21

And there’s a link back to yesterday when we saw that it is no good having light (the transforming power of the gospel)if we hide it (don’t share it).

Tying this together, the challenge is to accept that our new priorities in life may create friction and even separation from old relationships. And, whilst we will do well to try our best to retain those links, we must press ahead where God will lead us, whether we are comfortable with it, or not.

Father God, teach me Your ways, show me Your paths – that I might follow in the footsteps of Jesus. Amen
