Day 104 – The Parable Principle

“This is the meaning of the parable: The seed is the word of God. Those along the path are the ones who hear, and then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved. Those on the rocky ground are the ones who receive the word with joy when they hear it, but they have no root. They believe for a while, but in the time of testing they fall away. The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life’s worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature. But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop. Luke 8:11-15

Many are the things in life that appear unclear and confusing. We can do no better than follow the example of the disciples perplexed by this parable – and bring them to Jesus. For He understands all things and will reveal to us what we need to know. Clarity from revelation.

Is that all you’ve got to say? – I hear you thinking. Indeed it is – if we would but do it. This parable throws light on why we do not always take this simple step. Rather, instead of benefiting from divine revelation, we get bogged down by the limitations of our human understanding. We think we can work it out ourselves.

But the devil will whisk away our best intentions, the attractions of the world will divert us from seeking God’s path, the pressures of daily life will drown out His quiet voice, and our own worries will interfere with the signal between Him and me.

The solution? Try reflecting on these verses:

Show me your ways, Lord, teach me your paths. Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Saviour, and my hope is in you all day long. Psalm 25:4-5

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6

If the thoughts I have been sharing sometimes appear laboured, you can pretty much guarantee that’s where I was grappling with my intellect to make sense of the words before me. Where there is clarity and lucidly, it is where God has chosen to reveal things to me and through me. It has felt to me that the latter has been very much the dominant force:  I hope so, as that will benefit everyone a great deal more than my mere cogitations.

submit to him, and he will make your paths straight

Father God, I despair sometimes at my inconsistency in bringing everything to You, opting instead to struggle through by myself. Sorry. Show me Your ways, Lord. Always. Amen
