His disciples asked him what this parable meant. He said, “The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of God has been given to you, but to others I speak in parables, so that, ‘though seeing, they may not see; though hearing, they may not understand.’” Luke 8:9-10
“The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of God”. Is there something a bit dodgy going on here? Rolled up trousers and crooky fingered handshakes? It gets worse. It appears that Jesus is saying that He intentionally is obstructing the “unchosen” from gaining access to this knowledge. Why the mystery? Clearly not an equal opportunities God!
I know I’m on a bit of a roll about God’s grace in action, but surely, again, that is what is going on here. I understand God’s ways and become a member of His Kingdom, not by exercising my intellect or completing an application form, but through His revelation of Himself to me. Uh? The initiative is His, not mine. Ah!
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”Jeremiah 29:11-13
There’s a wonderfully balanced two-wayness here.I have to seek out His revelation before I find His plan for my life. It won’t simply land on my plate. Same principle with Jesus’ parables.
Lord Jesus, thank you for the wonderful stories You told, through which I can discover more of You and Your kingdom. Open my ears to hear what You are saying in this and all Your other parables. Amen.
